Sustainability
As a chemical manufacturer PelGar International has a high level of responsibility to provide solutions that balance the global need to control a wide range of pest species across a vast array of habitats whilst minimising their impact on the environment.
The main areas of responsibility are:
- Controlling the spread of pests and their impact on public health and the wider environment.
- Minimising the environmental impact of active ingredients with formulation and application technology, education and training.
PelGar works with an array of regulatory and industry bodies to lead the way in ensuring that humans, animals and the environment continue to be protected. Across the globe there are regulatory safeguards in place around the active ingredients used in pest control products. In addition, PelGar works closely with industry bodies and associations who govern the professionalism of those using our products. We work hard to manage our corporate responsibility in the following ways:
- Regulation
Prior to the sale of products the active ingredients and product formulations must be registered for sale in that country or region. This is a long and often complicated process. The regulations for each country direct what can be registered, how it is labelled and who can use it.
- Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU)
PelGar International is proud to be one of the founding members of CRRU, an UK industry initiative to ensure that rodenticides are used correctly and in ways that minimise the exposure of wildlife and other non-target animals. Under the banner ‘Think Wildlife’ CRRU promotes the responsible use of rodenticides through its Code of Best Practice, ensuring rodenticides are used as part of a planned and controlled approach. PelGar is involved in setting up similar models across the globe, working with local companies and distributors to help raise the standard of pest control.
- Industry Bodies
Around the world the availability of pest control products to amateurs and professionals varies, but in many countries there are pest control associations with whom PelGar works closely. These industry bodies work alongside the regulatory process to ensure that professional pest control members are well trained, kept up to date with the latest legislation and work to best practice guidelines.
- Conservation in Partnership
One of the areas of pest control that is often overlooked is the need to eradicate non-native species from an environment. Rats in particular are as prolific travellers and as adaptable to almost any environment as humans but they often prove problematic when they do so – their taste for birds eggs, for example, often results in the decimation of native bird populations. In 2014 PelGar established its Conservation in Partnership initiative to work with conservation groups to help eradicate the rodents so that these native species can recover, including the following projects:
Seabird Recovery Project, Isles of Scilly
Enhancing the Halo, New Zealand
Malololelei Reserve Project, Samoa
Predator Free 2050, New Zealand
