Supporting local and national projects, under its Conservation in Partnership initiative, is part of PelGar’s strategy to provide products and expertise to campaigns in the control of nuisance pests and vectors of disease.
New Zealand has been facing problems with rats, possums, feral cats and stoats killing millions of native birds and native species, such as lizards. Introduced pests have been threatening the economy and primary sector costing about $3.3billion. Not surprisingly the New Zealand Government is backing a plan to make the country, Predator Free by 2050.
Key to achieving this goal is for communities and organisations to work together in predator control trapping and monitoring. One of these conservation projects is taking place on the west coast of New Zealand, at Punakaiki, well known for its Pancake Rocks and Blowholes – a key breeding location for Westland petrels and great spotted kiwi. Predator Free Punakaiki is working local conservation groups and volunteers to create a native bird sanctuary.

An innovative ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) pest control solution, MinkPolice, has a track record of success in Europe and is now being utilised in the Punakaiki project. Plastic bait stations, made in the UK and supplied by PelGar International, have traps that have been fitted with a SIM that connects via Vodafone’s IoT network to the MinkPolice smart-phone application. Volunteers receive a notification when a trap is activated giving details of the exact location of the trap so it can be cleared and reset and so trap more pests, more frequently.
The traps, with Vodafone’s global SIM, will be on the NB-IoT network which will help the volunteers set traps in more remote areas of the sanctuary and provide more reliable connectivity. As Grant Parrett, of Predator-Free Punakaiki explained, “the benefits of this system are fantastic for our volunteers. Rather than having to walk through the area to check traps they can now just target traps known to have been activated. This will speed up the process and help us in achieving our goal of a Predator Free Punakaiki and ensure the future of our native species.”
“This is a great example of a PelGar Conservation in Partnership (CiP) project. Our involvement is supplying the plastic bait boxes but the collaboration with Vodafone New Zealand and MinkPolice is a great innovation which has the potential for application in a wide range of pest control situations,” concludes Gerwyn Jones, PelGar’s Asia Pacific Business Manager.

Sandy MacKay, new Technical Lead
for PelGar International
PelGar International is delighted to welcome Sandy MacKay as the new Head of its Technical Department, taking over the prestigious technical lead from company co-founder and Director Dr Jonathan Wade. Now retired from the industry, Jonathan had a long and distinguished career in public health and pest control including Head of Pest Control for the Dubai Municipality and then Technical Manager with Zeneca Public Health, culminating in the partnership with Dr Gareth Capel-Williams in 1995 and the launch of PelGar International.
A toxicologist, Sandy brings almost 30 years’ experience in research and product development to the business and has joined PelGar from Wickham Laboratories where he was head of the Toxicology Department.
Sandy will be responsible for PelGar’s insecticide formulation development laboratory at its Telford site in Shropshire, managed by formulation chemist Rupal Karpe and the unique Church Farm animal behaviour research and training facility in Hampshire managed by Jonathan’s son and biologist Alex Wade, where much of PelGar’s rodenticide and insecticide efficacy work is carried out. Together the team under Sandy will be responsible for PelGar’s rigorous scientific formulation development, analysis and testing before products can be registered and finally launched for sale.
MD Dr Gareth Capel-Williams commented, “Jonathan has a well-earned reputation in the pest control industry as an application technology expert, pest control expert and an astute product developer; the success of PelGar is a tribute to our collaboration and he will be sorely missed. They are big shoes to fill but with Sandy’s expertise at the helm of the technical team we look forward to building upon past success as we take the company in to a new era.”

Understanding Resistance

Thursday, 11 August 2016 09:00
Resistance as we know it is a largely misunderstood concept. So often it is used interchangeably in conversation with words such as tolerance and immunity. In reality all three words mean very specific and very different things.
In a recent article published in International Pest Control July/August 2016, Alex Wade, Technical Manager, PelGar International explains that there are different types of resistance: behavioural; biochemical and genetic. He then outlines the effects of resistance on achieving rodent control when using rodenticides.

About Us

PelGar International was incorporated in 1995 to develop and supply innovative and novel rodenticide and insecticide products to the global public health pesticide market. PelGar believes that, while the active ingredients used in the industry are common, the target pests and the environment in which they live are very different. Providing cost effective control therefore means that the active substance needs to be available in a wide range of formulations and this is where PelGar’s expertise lies.
