Silverfish are primitive, wingless insects known for their silvery appearance and rapid, fish-like movements. Commonly found in damp, dark environments, they feed on starchy materials and can damage paper, textiles, and stored goods.

Facts

  • Name: Common Silverfish, Lepisma saccharinum, with related species in the order Zygentoma
  • Life cycle: Inomplete metamorphosis
    Egg: Eggs are laid in cracks and crevices, hatching in two to eight weeks depending on humidity and temperature
    Nymphs: Nymphs resemble adults and moult multiple times before reaching maturity Development can take several months to years
    Adult: Adults may live up to eight years under favourable conditions
  • Description:
    Small, wingless insects with flattened, elongated bodies covered in fine scales. Typically 10 to 15 mm in length, with a silvery-grey sheen. Three long tail-like appendages at the rear and two long antennae at the front. Fast-moving and nocturnal, avoiding light and disturbance.
  • Behaviour:
    Nocturnal and secretive, often hiding in cracks, behind skirting boards, or under appliances. Feed on carbohydrates and proteins including paper, glue, textiles, dead insects, and food residues. Can survive long periods without food. Molting continues throughout life, with some individuals moulting over 50 times.
  • Habitat:

    Found globally in homes, commercial buildings, and storage facilities. Prefer warm, humid environments such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and attics. Often found near sources of moisture and organic material. Unable to thrive in dry, low-humidity conditions.
