Native to Southeast Asia, the Yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) was accidentally introduced to France in the early 2000s, likely through international trade. Its continuing spread has made it one of Europe's most closely monitored invasive insect species.

The primary concern surrounding the Yellow-legged hornet is its impact on pollinators. Honeybees form a significant proportion of its diet, with hornets often targeting hives and capturing returning foragers.
